Microsoft has purchased 666,624 IP addresses from bankrupt Canadian company Nortel at a cost of $7.5 million.
The cost per address is $11.25 (£6.97).
The shortage of IPv4 addresses means that companies are desperate to buy any that become available ahead of the switch to IPv6.
